Situated along the banks of the Bow River, the zoo was threatened by the floods of 2013, where many animals were in danger. However, the conservation efforts quickly focused on rescue and preservation of the wildlife. The zoo has been restored, and visitors once again are enjoying the interactive animal feeding, tours, and interpretive talks that are part of the program that happens daily at the zoo. It really is a destination any visitor should see.
If you are a history buff, you may want to visit Fort Calgary. This is a reconstruction of life in Fort Calgary back in 1875. It was the first North West Mounted Police fort constructed. There are many replicas of buildings and vehicles to draw visitors back into an experience of the past. And the costumes of the staff add to making your walk in the past a reality. They also offer a Sunday Brunch, which is delicious, with a seasoning of history!
If you are a fan of heights, then you will really like the Calgary Tower! This centrally located tower rises an amazing 191 metres into the sky and provides some of the most amazing views of the prairies to the Canadian Rockies. There is a 360 degree observation deck at the top and you can view some of Calgary’s landmarks from a bird’s eye view. Did we mention there is also a glass floor!! And if you are hungry, there is a fine dining restaurant at the top. What a great way to enjoy a wonderful dinner, while taking in the Calgary skyline.
For the young a heart, there is a very fun amusement park just 5 minutes west of the city limits called Calaway Park. This is Western Canada’s Largest Outdoor Amusement Park! Loaded with tons of fun carnival games and treats, over 30 awesome rides, and live shows, this is just an awesome family destination point. There is an all-inclusive admission ticket which includes parking, all the shows and unlimited rides. And if you travelled here on vacation, they also have a camp ground! Pack up the kids, bring everyone down to Calaway Park, and have a wonderful family activity!
