What is ABST?

Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) is the mandatory 40-hour training course that anyone applying for a security worker licence in Alberta must complete.


The course covers the legislative, procedural, and practical knowledge you need to work as a licensed security professional in the province.


You cannot apply for your Alberta security license until you've completed an accredited ABST course and passed the provincial licensing exam.

About the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) Program

To qualify for an Alberta Security Services Licence, ABST students must score 80% or higher on the exam. Successful candidates will receive an official certificate from the Alberta Ministry of Justice.

Security service workers monitor, patrol and guard private property and protect people. In Alberta, you must be licensed to work as a:

Licences are issued under the Security Services and Investigators Act by the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General.

Once you have logged your required 40 hrs we will provide you with your Training Certificate and instructions to book your Exam.


The exam is paid separately to the provider and costs $60.
